Farmers Merchant derives from the name of the first business in the building and reflects the purpose of the current business. In 1913 the “Farmers and Merchant Bank” was established; ninety years later when the current business opened as a venue to sell Missouri products, the “Farmer's Merchant” seemed an appropriate name. This historic building on North First Street in Owensville served the community as Farmers and Merchants Bank from 1913 to 1932. It closed during the “great depression” and reopened as the Citizen's Bank of Owensville in 1934 and remained here until 1963. At that time the bank was moved south on First Street to the current location of First Bank. Built eclectically, incorporating Federal, Palladium and German styles, this building has the builder's signature in two places with the date 1913. “J. B. Coulter, December 18, 1913” is written in concrete above the coffee serving area. Mr. Coulter was obviously proud of his building. The restoration of the building began in February 2003, with the first floor coffee shop opening October 8, 2003. The second story has also been restored. Pressed tin ceilings and original floors retain the original character of the building. Today, our goal is to showcase Missouri products and to provide quality and unique foods at affordable prices.
